Reflecting on 2017

Here we are at the start of 2018, reflecting on the highs and lows of the past year.

Coventry Slings started the year strongly with busy meets, lots of hires and consultations and the wonderful experience of the Midlands Baby Carrying Convention. We’ve ended the year more quietly, with the futures of the drop in meets in doubt due to low turnouts

At the beginning of the year we were working hard on the preparations for the Midlands Baby Carrying Convention, but numerous other changes were happening. We took on new jobs, and Gillian was expecting the twins just before the convention. Meets continued to be popular however, especially the Rugby meet which has remained popular.

The MBCC was an amazing experience for us. A full on learning experience with many lessons to take away as well, but an exhilarating and interesting day filled with friends new and old. We are very excited to be running again in 2018, however the new date will be in October. Head over to mbcc.coventryslings.co.uk for updates and keep an eye on Facebook!

This year we have worked with over 150 families, but overall have seen around a 40% drop in the use of our services. Partly this may be down to us personally not being able to put in as much time as in 2016, but it does reflect why we are making changes to the format of our sessions. As we continue to move forward into 2018 we will be working as a team to provide a new line up of meets to encourage more people to come, and look at how we spread the word of our services.

In the second half of the year we have launched our newborn scheme, which is already proving popular, and started to liaise with the NICU at University Hospital, a relationship we look forward to expanding. We have refreshed the range we have available to hire – look out for our new items, and also some older items being listed for sale.

We know that things need to change in 2018 and will be looking at what we can do. We have no desire to close the service we offer, however we also cannot operate at a loss. Please do spread the word about the services we offer. We have leaflets, business cards and posters about the newborn scheme available – if you know of somewhere who will put a poster up please let us know or take some to hand out yourself!

We are also very much in search of volunteers and new peer supporters – if you are interested please get in touch and we can provide further information.

Here’s to 2018 everyone, thank you for your support and we wish you a wonderful New Year.
